Peruvian Purple Corn Drink Can Prevent Cancer: Official
LIMA, June 21 (BERNAMA-NNN-ANDINA)
Daily consumption of chicha morada, a drink made from purple corn, has a high content of antioxidants which help prevent cancers such as colon cancer, a Peruvian health official said on Wednesday.
Martha Villar, director of complementary medicine at Peru's public health agency EsSalud, said that the drink, with high consumption at all levels, also prevents cardiovascular diseases.
She explained that the antioxidants of the corn known as anthocyanins give the drink a characteristic intense dark purple colour and protect the cells for not developing non-communicable diseases such as cancer, Prensa Latina reported.
The specialist said that the drink prevents blood vessel fragility, because the purple corn can protect the vascular endothelium and reduce the chances of formation of fatty plaques, which result in reducing the risk of cardiovascular problems.
I'm always on the lookout for the next super drink. My current choice is fresh or cold pressed coconut water which has plenty of electrolytes. However, chicha morada, a drink made from purple corn in Peru is being touted as a way to reduce cardiovascular problems and other ailments by Peru's health agency.
